* I'm still sick, but I've entered into the stage where I hack up crud from deep inside my chest.  Gross, but a good sign.  By Monday I should be right as rain.

*  I went into the garden this morning to uncover all the stuff I quickly covered last night in case it froze (it didn't), and I said "hello" to the sheep who stay in the front of my neighbors property this time of year.  They like me.  I throw over green things to them whenever I'm in the area.

* I can't remember what this tree is called but I caught a pic of it blooming.  The bees love it.  When I first moved here they looked like two overgrown bushes, and my mom did a great job taming and shaping them.  I try and keep it up every year.

* Still no new food.  I've found many items in the freezer I'd forgotten I put there.  I can probably go another week before I have to break down and shop.

I bought this little feeder because the birds keep landing on the tiny bit of window sill there is and looking inside.
Makes me feel guilty.

I bought this whole set just for the two offset screwdrivers.  No place I looked had them for sale by themselves.
Anybody need a screwdriver?

Finally some Fava Beans (but not many)

*  I watched (back to back) In The Valley of Elah and Rendition (including the documentary in special features) Friday night .  I didn't sleep well that night.  I'm glad I watched though even though they made me completely miserable.

*  I voted on the way home from work Saturday.

* Cyber and I watched the Academy Awards last night.  Even she thought it was too long.

My neighbor's daugher is now old enough to hang with.  She was barely a toddler when I moved here.  She plays in the back yard or works in the shop with her father during the time I garden.  We gradually began to converse across the fence - and one day I asked her if she wanted to come over and help me in the garden...... from then on, if she is outside when I'm in the garden she comes over.  I have to remind her to ask her parents first.  She's no trouble, and she usually doesn't stay to long - so it's all good.  I can never remember her name, so I just always say something like "howz it going buddy!"  :-)

Ahhhhh the ladies have returned.  They are early too!  I found over 20 in my garden this weekend.  I didn't notice much of a bug population, but there must be some otherwise they wouldn't be hanging out.

I'm thinning out the carrots so the rest can grow bigger.

Aren't these adorable?

I chopped them up really good

and tossed them into a mixed greens salad (making it even more mixed....)

Go Greens!!

On a Slightly Negative Note.......

*  I hooked up my PC again after over 8 months of it being in the closet.  I moved it into the livingroom.  This is a tiny step forward for me.  Home PC (even seeing it hooked up and sitting there) has been a trigger to smoke.  I plan to get on it every day for a few minutes (I don't have internet, but I can to file maintenance etc.) and see how it goes.  Before I hooked it up I detailed it and also replaced the CDRW drive that's been broken forever.  After two little hiccups I had it up and running great.

*  Whilst working on the computer I noticed again how weird my habit of talking to inanimate objects is.  I wondered, as I talked my PC through the installation of the new CDRW drive, if other people do this.  I also greet my truck in the morning and again when I get ready to go home for the day.  Things like that.  I don't think it makes me crazy, but I do wonder if I'm officially eccentric.

* Deep green leafy vegetables are in full production in the garden.  Lettuce, Spinach, Mustard Greens, Bok Choy, and Collards which are the stars this year.  I've learned to like Collard Greens.  Funny how the vegetables you like least are the ones that grow the best for you.  There's alot to like about Collards if you grow them yourself.  They taste much better than what you buy in the store.  A lot of people don't know that Collards are high in Calcium and anti-oxidants.

Nothin' but Greens (and garlic/onions)

Collards (and this was after I harvested for the week - W00t!)

I harvested my oldest compost pile.  Got about 6 wheelbarrow full out of it.  Nice stuff.

Most of it went into the new bed I'm digging (I'm planting a cover crop of rye for the winter - this coming summer it will be planted in sweet potatoes, but it will belong to the main vegetable garden and will be rotated along with the other rows/beds).

Spent all day (save tea and potty breaks) outside in the garden.
It was just the medicine I needed to get me out of the emotional gloom I'd been in.

Tuesday.................

DERMATOLOGIST
I went to the Dermatologist.  She froze the dots on my nose and right temple.  She said one was definately pre-cancerous.  I'm putting those dots bandaids on them - the kind you'd use to hide a labret piercing hole.

QUILT
I worked more on my quilt; however, I should have been working on Sierra's gown.  I will get what is in the works for the quilt top done and set it aside.  If I'm not careful, I will just work on this and forget the gown and my own Halloween costume - there isn't time to work on all three.

KNEE
My knee is very painful.  I hope this will begin to fade soon because it's really a bummer.

GARDEN
I got row one amended and tilled/raked.  I covered it with plastic so the grass and weeds don't creep back in.  I also weed whipped.  I didn't see my neighbor, so I don't know the status of my mower.  I hope this weekend it will be operational as the back section is getting tall and it's too far away for the electric mower since the electricity is messed up in the outbuildings.

DVD's
I checked out "23", "The Host", and one other I can't remember the name of.  23 was good, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it (would have been disappointed).  The Host was a cross between Jaws and Godzilla.  Parts of it entertaining, but it was long and drawn out.  The monster was scary though and there were a couple of moments where I jumped out of my skin :-)  Saturday I'll check out Zodiac - been looking forward to seeing that one.

p.s - I called a tree trimmer and made an appointment for an estimate.  This will be next Tuesday at 1pm.

ZUCCHINI
Vine borers got to them - all 6.  I dug the little buggers out of 4 but lost two.  I'm going to start some more and see - kind of late for a fall crop.  Doesn't hurt to try though.

VEST PROJECT
Painfully slow progress.  Tonight I will fuse the interfacing to the facings and sew and finish them to the vest.  If I have the energy I'll do the arm holes and finish the sucker up so I can start on Sierra's Halloween gown.

NEW MAGAZINE
Received my first issue of Backwoods Home Magazine yesterday.  A lot like Mother Earth News only more.....redneck??.  Definitely has a political agenda which I'm not used to.  I guess they are Libertarians - not sure exactly what that is but they are sure against any kind of meddling of the government  and they seem to like guns a lot.  This is fine - I've always had an open mind - this won't be any different. I will enjoy the self-sufficiency and homesteading articles.

MY NEIGHBOR
My neighbor to the left is very nice.  He is even getting his friend to look at my riding mower for me (it needs tweaking constantly).  I can't recall his name, and this bothers me so much.  I hate it when people know my name and I've forgotten theirs.

WEED EATER
I was using the weed eater yesterday and the gas line split.  I was way proud of myself.  Instead of cursing my bad luck I trimmed it and re-attached it.  It was too short though, so that didn't work.  So I took it off entirely and brought it to Ace Hardware and told the clerk "dude, I need more of whatever this is".  He cut me some and I went home and put it on - off I went again.  Yay!  Soon I will be Grisly Adams or the Home Improvement Guy.....what is his name???

I took this Tuesday.  Gotta get that row mulched!
I checked on these yesterday, and they have blossoms - I should have zucchini by next week!

There is a volunteer watermelon vine that's growing out of one of my compost piles.  Ha!  I'll let it go and see what happens.  I vowed never to grow watermelon again after last year's nightmare (vines practially took over the garden and attracted all sorts of insects).  This one chose me though, so I should give it a chance :-)

I let my Lemon Basil flower, and it's attracted many butterflies.  Not sure which type they are, but they are a lot of them.

Pretty recent pictures of the garden

This is Asparagus (yard long) beans in the back of tee-pee and Malabar Spinach in front.  The Malabar is supposed to grow up the ropes, but I don't think it's aware of that.....

This is Okra which grows so well - I'm actually learning how to cook it so I won't gag because I like this plant to much.

In the foreground is Thai Lemon Basil - grows really good, and I've harvested it so many times already.  There is a parsley stuck in there with them somewhere too.  To the right is New Zealand Spinach and in the background you can see Okra and recently harvested Garlic.

This is a Daikon radish that sprouted voluntarily after the other Daikons were long past harvested.  I didn't think it would do anything due to the heat, but it grew to a large size and was delicious.  This could be due to the cooler than normal temperatures in the beginnin

I actually did this over the weekend.  Harvested all the garlic and dealt with it.  Pickled some, froze some, and gave some away.

Today I spent all day prepping and preparing garlic pickles and salsas.

It started out with a trip to the garden in the morning and seeing several of my garlics bursted open and snails on them (wet weather being the cause of both).  I decided it was time to just pull it all up and deal with it.  I also went ahead and picked a gallon of mild jalapenos and pulled up the remaining onions.

It took hours to prep the garlic, but I did it and ended up with about 5 pounds of prepped cloves and about 3 pounds of tender garlic greens.

I pickled 5 half pints of garlic cloves and froze another pint.  I also prepped and canned 7 pints of salsa.

That pretty much took up the whole day.  I did get out once to Walmart to buy more canning jars.

Sure will be glad when the weather dries up a little so I can get going in the garden - it's getting a little scary out there.

Pretty uneventful holiday.
Was kind of hoping I'd get invited over to someone's place - but no.
Not feeling sorry for myself.  It was a good day nevertheless :-)

Finally pictures of the garden.  I took these weeks ago, but it took a week to get the CD made from the printer (long story).  Can't wait until my digital camera comes back from the shop.

I'm cutting this for space.  Click on link to see entire post.

Pulled up a tomato plant this morning.  One of my jumbo cherry plants that I don't know the variety of.  I'm thinking it's blight, but it might be one of the wilts - not sure.  All I know is yesterday it looked fine, and last night I went out to water after work and it was all yellow - thought it was just the darkness that was making it look funny.  I checked again this morning and - it's a gonner.  Pulled it up and away from the others hoping it didn't already infect them.

It's raining, so not much gardening to day.  After work I'll do house cleaning, call Lowes to remind them the freezer is supposed to be delivered tomorrow, and head out to return DVD's and grocery shop.  I'm also going to make those freezer pickles I got the recipe for.

Hopefully tomorrow I can spend time in the garden.

Today I finally got the entire vegetable garden irrigation system finished. Yay.  It's great except for a couple of things. One of the dripper connection is too big and it's releasing too much water.  Tried plugging it with a goof plug, but it still sprays.  Might have to splice.  Also the dripper lines suck.  Some holes release some don't - no good.  Might replace them with something else and just chaulk up the expense  ($27) to learning.

Asparagus (yard long) beans are officially producing.  They are yummy too!  Plenty to go around, so I'll be sharing with co-workers when I go back to work.

I pulled up the cucumber vines today.  They are spent, and it's time for them to go onto their next life in the compost bin.  They did a great job, and I'll be planting the next generation next month for fall harvest.

Still burning up the limbs and brush piled under the big tree.  It'll be several weeks I think before it's all burned.  I'm putting the ashes in the compost bin.
