Pretty recent pictures of the garden

This is Asparagus (yard long) beans in the back of tee-pee and Malabar Spinach in front.  The Malabar is supposed to grow up the ropes, but I don't think it's aware of that.....

This is Okra which grows so well - I'm actually learning how to cook it so I won't gag because I like this plant to much.

In the foreground is Thai Lemon Basil - grows really good, and I've harvested it so many times already.  There is a parsley stuck in there with them somewhere too.  To the right is New Zealand Spinach and in the background you can see Okra and recently harvested Garlic.

This is a Daikon radish that sprouted voluntarily after the other Daikons were long past harvested.  I didn't think it would do anything due to the heat, but it grew to a large size and was delicious.  This could be due to the cooler than normal temperatures in the beginnin

I actually did this over the weekend.  Harvested all the garlic and dealt with it.  Pickled some, froze some, and gave some away.

Today I spent all day prepping and preparing garlic pickles and salsas.

It started out with a trip to the garden in the morning and seeing several of my garlics bursted open and snails on them (wet weather being the cause of both).  I decided it was time to just pull it all up and deal with it.  I also went ahead and picked a gallon of mild jalapenos and pulled up the remaining onions.

It took hours to prep the garlic, but I did it and ended up with about 5 pounds of prepped cloves and about 3 pounds of tender garlic greens.

I pickled 5 half pints of garlic cloves and froze another pint.  I also prepped and canned 7 pints of salsa.

That pretty much took up the whole day.  I did get out once to Walmart to buy more canning jars.

Sure will be glad when the weather dries up a little so I can get going in the garden - it's getting a little scary out there.

Pretty uneventful holiday.
Was kind of hoping I'd get invited over to someone's place - but no.
Not feeling sorry for myself.  It was a good day nevertheless :-)

Talked to dad - he seems to be doing good.  I think I shouldn't have suggested he stay in a hotel for the first few days after surgery.  I might have hurt my families feelings by suggesting their home was too chaotic/cluttered for someone trying to recuperate.  Ah well, they are forgiving people - and I'm sure they know I meant well.

Spent almost the entire day outside - it was awesome.  I got the entire vegetable garden mulched for summer.  I also got the front gate area cleared and the livestock panels taken down (I will use one on the back gate and one to trellis peas this fall - yay!).  I spent a good hour threading the new fencing behind the old playhouse (soon to be coop for yard birds I next year).  It kept getting caught on the barbed wire, so I had to put a big piece of cardboard back there and put it in front of that - even so it got hung up several times.  I haven't secured it yet; I think I'll need to drive in extra posts (which I have).  Once the fence is up and the gates are fortified the dogs can come into the middle half of the property (yay).

I've had this Livejournal for a long time, but I haven't written in it much - and almost no public posts.
I'm going to start writing more I hope.

Spring garden is all but done.  Still have garlic / onions in the ground, but everything else is replaced with summer fare.

I have planted for summer:

Tomatoes:  444's, Celebrity, and some cherries that I didn't get a variety name on

Peppers:   Sweet Bell and mild Jalapenos

Soybeans:  Can't remember variety

Garbanzo Beans: An experiment - we'll see

Millet:  Only because the bugs ate the Amaranth and I needed somthing to go there; I'll turn it under when it gets high enough

Basil:  Thai Lemon, but it's pretty scrawny looking - don't know if it will survive

Okra:  Half a row only because I want the experience (will give any and all harvest away)

Pole Beans:  On a nifty tee-pee I made (pic later I hope)

Cucumbers:  Also on a nifty Tee Pee (these already have cukes on the vines - yay)

New Zealand Spinach:  First time growing this - so far so good (bugs don't seem to notice it)

Malabar Spinach:  Not sure if this will take off - time will tell.

Got the Pommegranite trees in the ground over the winter.  They have new growth.

Blackberries I put in over the winter have growthon them.  Won't get any berries this year, but the growth this year will bear fruit next year. Yay.

Fig tree is now taller than me and very healthy looking.  I should get a good batch of figs this year from last year's growth.

That's pretty much it.  Don't plan on planting anything else until Indian Summer.  From now until then I'll be keeping things up, harvesting, and doing the list of summer garden projects I have scheduled.
