dalthauser: (WTF!)
This morning I brushed my teeth and washed my face.  Thirty minutes later I turned on the water to wash dishes - and a third of the water pressure.  When things like this happen I automatically think the worst (water main break).  I walked out to the "back 40" looking for any puddles above the ground - when I got to the water main shut off valve - I shut it off as a precaution.  While I was kneeling down there I got two fire ant bites on my legs.  I walked back and stopped at the chicken pen.  One of the hens had a bloody butt.  This is the same one I had to isolate when I first got them.  The others were taking turns picking at her butt.  Jeez!!  I'm sure they aren't all aggressive - but saw the blood (or smelled it) and thought "lunch!".  I caught her and put her in a carrier with food/water/bedding to deal with later because I was going to be late for work.

The chicken forum I post at says to put pick lotion on it (you get it at the feed store) - it's the same principle as the stuff you put on nails not to bite them (tastes awful).  I'll wash her up tonight and put it on her and turn her loose.  They say, as long as I keep applying it, they should leave her alone until it heals.

So anyway, I finally get out the door leaving me house waterless - - and I'm driving down the road and see the water company replacing a huge water main pipe. Guess that's why the pressure was down.  So, that's a relief anyway.

*  Earlier this week I attempted to repair my leaking tub spigot (SPIGOT!!).  I met a nice gentleman at Lowes who was kind enough to offer to come over and assist me since I'd made over 4 trips to the store that day trying different things.  That evening when I got home I went ahead and put everything back together and turned the water on - voila!  No leak (well, just an intermittant drip which was nothing).  So - it's all good for now.  I did learn some things from the experience though which is good, and I made a friend who told me to keep his number in case the drip decides to come back.

*  I still haven't found my cell phone that I lost just before Christmas.  Frustrating.

*  I ordered my chickens Tuesday.  They are Delawares - I bought 25 females and 1 rooster.  I plan on only having a flock of a dozen, but I needed the extras for warmth while traveling - the extras that make it to adulthood I can easily sell to someone who wants an egg laying pet.

*  I placed an ad on Craigslist looking for someone to help me build my chicken coop.  I offered vegetables and eggs in exchange.  I got many replies.  One from someone with the email address of DrtyCowboy1@chooseaserver.com  and one from a man who says he's too far away to help, but shared a poem with me about naked people..... :-)  Most of the replies were helpful though.

*  I watched Santa Clause 3 last night.  It was pretty good - seemed really low budget - but I really liked Jack Frost though.

*  With the whole housing crisis and recession in the news I'm reminded to be grateful that I own my home with a reasonable low interest mortgage that - as long as I'm employed - I can afford to make payments on every month.  There are plenty of people not as fortunate as I am.  I feel very poor most days, but I don't have the massive credit card debt other people have, and I live within my means - so that's something.

*  Here is a random picture of me brushing my teeth .........

*  I may be babysitting a miniature donkey soon.  Someone on Craigslist posted a request for a temporary home for their pet.  I'd been toying with the idea of getting a pair of these at some point for pets; this would be a good opportunity to get some first hand experience.

*  It's rainy and cold here.  I'm wanting to finish painting my closet, but I'm sure it's not good to do that in damp weather.  I'll fix the leak in my bathtub this weekend instead - it's leaking approx 8 gallons a day (I have a bucket under the spigot and when it fills I dump it in the washing machine or outside into the blackberries so none is wasted).

* I finally got the new MJB CD Growing Pains.  She doesn't disappoint.  I don't care for Hip Hop usually, but I'm a big fan of hers - and this CD is mostly what I like to listen to from her.  I read recently that Mary is going to play Nina Simone in an MTV Biopic.  I got goosebumps because Mary J. always reminds me of Nina Simone.

Plumbing

About 5 minutes before I was supposed to be out the door to work I reached in the under-the-kitchen-sink cabinet to get some paper towels and I see it's all wet and soggy - the "floor" of the cabinet warped under the weight of the stuff in there.

Crap - just when I make progress paying on house project stuff ........

I don't know what it is, but I'm hoping it's  a problem with the drain line.  I might be able to fix that myself.  I put a crockpot under where I think it's leaking and went to work.  It's all I can do for now.  Probably should have shut off the water to the house just in case.

For sure I'll need to repair the plumbing and then the floor of that cabinet.  Rats!  :-)

Last night I was outside playing catch with the dogs, and I leaned down to grab the ball by the water main and I heard a dreaded hissing.  Sure enough the (recently repaired) water main sprung another leak.  I quickly went inside and filled up a few containers with water and then shut the water off.

Next morning I called the plumber who did the original repairs (this will actually be the 3rd time out for him on this repair).  He was a little grouchy about it, but said he'd be out.  I don't blame him - I wouldn't be thrilled about having to come out and get all muddy again either.  He was at the house when I left for work (I tied up Chi so he wouldn't bother his work -  hope he remembers to set him free when he leaves).
