Sunday I was driving home from picking up the chicken hutch frame
(It's upside down here - fit in the bed exactly!)

and there were two dogs trotting down FM 725 weaving in and out of traffic.  I slowed down to get past them and felt a pang of worry for them.  I continued on towards my house.  Half way down Zipp I said to myself "If they are still there when I go back - I'll bring them home and find their owner".  I would have wanted someone to do that for me and my dogs (and if someone would have - - - who knows, it might have prevented the disaster that took place).  Well,  they were still there, so I stopped and opened up the cab door to the truck.  In they jumped and I took them home.

One was a Weimeraner Mix female the other a male Spaniel Mix.  Cute dogs.  I gave them water and fed them - then played with them for awhile.  They were find hanging out in the back yard.

Monday I had jury duty - so I had to leave the house really early.  I didn't get selected, so I went to the library on my way home and made a poster with the digital pictures I took.  I took it to Kinkos to make copies, and the guy there did them for free (nice of him).  My first stop with the posters was the local shelter.  I went in and explained I had these dogs, and I'd take care of them Okay - I just needed them to post the poster and keep their ears open for anyone calling for them.  They said - no need, the owners already were calling about them.  Yay!  The owner came by that afternoon and picked them up.  Cool - I felt really good about the experience.

Tuesday was Pecan day.  My two pecan trees have already dropped half their pecans - and they needed to be picked up before the Squirrels got everything.  I harvested over 20 pounds total between the two trees leaving a bunch for the Squirrels as well.  Good fun.  Shelling them won't be as fun....

No nut cracker at first, so I used the handles of my can opener (I since went out and got an actual nut cracking tool which made things a lot easier).

So glad to hear that the doggy situation turned out well.
Those pecans look huge. The ones I picked up in my yard are tiny- the tree was big enough, maybe it needs to be fed.

I'm glad too. I was thinking I'd end up with dogs - and I'm really not ready emotionally. I think the pecans did so well because of all the rain - I really don't fertilize to speak of. This is the first year I had a really good crop because I don't irrigate. This has been so neat - I may water in the future! :)

I remember sitting with my Dad, especially this time of year, shelling pecans. It was a thrill to get each half out in a whole piece.

Doggies go home - excellent!

I have Thurs/Fri/Sat off - and I'll be shelling pecans. My fingers always get stained brown and I always break them into pieces - but it's still fun.

Glad you stopped and rescued the pooches :) And glad their human companion stepped up to locate them. Out here so many just get dumped :/

I know what you mean about pecans. I have 13 pecan trees on my property (6 native pecans and 7 papershell pecans). What some folks dont realize is pecan trees only make "mature" (full sized) pecans on average of every other year. So with 13 trees I end up with a plethora of pecans every year. Enough for us (and extended family) as well as local wildlife. We usually end up with that many trees on average at least 4 or 5 are making mature pecans.

Great save for the dogs!

I have to tell you that we have three walnut trees and i dislike them. They are messy and not worth the trouble. I fill wheel barrows full of them and dump them over the hill. Shame on me!

I took a picture of them; i'll have to make a post of it.

Hahaha. They say you can't plant tomatoes or anything from the nightshade family where Walnuts have been. I wish I lived near you - I'd keep your yard free of walnuts. You can crush them and use them as mulch - that would be useful :-)

Here is about 10 sq. ft. of walnut fall out. I'd already cleaned this area twice. The area under the trees covers about 60 x 60 ft. The nuts have this husk around them that dyes your fingers, or the house or anything they drop on, a lovely brown!

We have an unatrural amount of squirrlals in the area!

Come get them.

I'll try again

Wow - I'd be all over that. It's free protein and healthy fats.... hahaha. I know about the staining. I just finished shelling all my pecans and my fingers were stained brown. Ended up having to use a bleach solution to get it out.

Hey, I found your LJ from the 40+ community. I have a statistics project to do. The assignment is to choose any topic, as long as it involves two different quantitative variables that may be related in some way. I want to show the relationship between credit card debt and college students, or people in a particular age group. The participants of my poll so far are all in the same age group ( 18 – 22 range), so I wanted to join the 40+ community to get participants of a different age group, but it’s a community for making friends only, so my only resort was to comment on the users pages instead. So if you don’t mind, could you please answer these questions:

Are you in college?
How old are you?
How much credit card debt do you have?

Thank you!!

That's great that you rescued those dogs and returned them to their owners. I hate seeing lost dogs and always try to help them too.

Fresh pecans - yum! We used to pick pecans in Tucson every fall. There was an old pecan orchard turned into a city park, and most of the trees still produced a lot of pecans. Also, one of my coworkers had a pecan farm and he would have a pecan party in the fall; he would use one of those tree shaker machines on a tractor to shake the pecans off of a couple trees for his guests to gather up.

There are a bunch of pecans up high in my trees I can't get to. Never thought of shaking the branches - might give that a try. I have about 10 pounds of shelled pecans right now though - so that is good enough for me. The rest I'll probably let the squirrels get. Though if they don't fall in a month or two I'll shake them to the ground to make it easier... haha.
