Kitchen Pantry

I am back to clearing my cupboards - I think it's been about a year since the last time.

I want to use up all my boxes and cans of stuff in the cupboards and stuff I've frozen in the big freezer.

Once I get the extras out - I hope I can be more frugal (and health minded) when purchasing new foodstuff.

I'm especially interested in limiting my purchases of anything processed.  I'm going to try and do as much as I can from scratch.

Food Purchasing

I'd like to try and pull together a food purchasing club from people at my work and in my neighborhood who are like-minded.  I'm especially interested in the bulk purchase of dried beans, grains, lentils.  The price per pound lately has shot up for these items, and I'm convinced that a better deal can be had.  Other items folks may be interested in going together to purchase would be toilet paper, cleaning supplies, and possibly meat.

Interesting you mention this. I am reading more and more about processed foods and what they do to our bodies. I am also of a mind to eliminate as many as possible.
Another advantage to my love of cooking, I guess.

I am in a homesteading group on Facebook, and there was a mention of a book called "Nourishing Traditions" - I've been looking into it, and it's been challenging my ideas of diet. I was able to get my hands on a video of a lecture the author gave, and it was eye-opening. Not sure if I totally agree with all of her ideas, but it's totally FOOD for thought... .:-)

I would be VERY interested in that deal! Jared and I are still determined to transition our way into Vegetarianism!

Maybe we should set up a Facebook group people in our immediate area could join. Maybe call it the SA/NB Food Hui (Hui means family in Hawaiian, but it's also used when a group of like minded people get together to go in on something together) :-) Good weekend project for me since it's so damn cold outside.

I need to put Nourishing Trad's on my to-read list.

Even though I just bought a bunch frozen food from Costco, (for "emergencies") I need to do what you are doing.

One thing I started lately is slow-cooking a big batch of beans, then freezing them in pint jars. A pint is about equivalent to a can of beans. They are pretty tasty.

I've ended up buying local dried beans from farmers markets - I've gotten way to many stale or bad bean from the groceries. I haven't hit the Mexican grocery yet.

You can freeze canning jars?

I have heard of other people freezing in them, and I've never had an issue with them - just make sure to leave a some room at the top for liquids to expand as they freeze. So far, I haven't had any problems with it.

I think there are some jars specifically made for freezing, but I've never looked for them.

Good work. How's your garden doing? What are you currently growing?

Right now I've got all the cool weather stuff going. It's producing enough for the restaurant and us. Marcel uses the parsley, spinach, radishes, lettuce, and swiss chard in the restaurant. I will need to be more productive to have enough to sell though. :-)

That's cool that your veggies are being use in Marcel's restaurant!
