Apparently a U.S Marine throws a defenseless little puppy over a cliff while his friends laugh about Mar
If it weren't for someone posting it on YouTube I'd never have known about it.

It sounds like he got an administrative discharge which is unacceptable- if it's true - it should have been dishonorable - and he should have been prosecuted based on our animal cruelty laws.

Article here: http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/06/12/marine.puppy/index.html?iref=newssearch

I won't embed the Youtube video - if you want to see it you can go to Youtube and search (it's probably on the front page anyway).

P.S: If I see this guy on Larry King later I'm going to send CNN a box of rotten eggs.

I'm glad - I didn't even watch it - it was enough to see the partial clip on cnn. Sickening.

Omg that's horrible. I agree...admin discharge is not sufficient. Animal cruelty is a FELONY in many states. He should have been prosecuted. Gah...can't handle hearing stuff like that. I really, really hate animal cruelty.

I have never watched the video by choice, much like the Humane Society video on downer cows. I can generally handle watching about anything, but I cannot handle animal abuse.

I agree he should be prosecuted.

To me it speaks volumes about how the common soldier is "educated" by their higher ups. Its easier to dehumanize the native people in the region you are invading. So in WW2 the Japanese were "gooks". They arent Iraqi people, they are "towel-heads" or the ever popular "sand nigger" - and yes I've heard both disgusting terms thrown around quite a bit since 9/11.

We have soliders using the Koran as target practice and a host of human rights abuses from Blackwater and our own troops.

So is it really that much of a stretch to think our soldiers are capable of tossing a puppy off a cliff?

As disgusting and deplorable as it is...and as much as I HATE to see such things....it doesnt surprise me at all.

What worries me MORE is the shit that is going on that people are too intimidated/scared to report on. Wouldnt suprise me in the least to hear stories of defenseless Iraqi women being raped....or worse.

(sarcasm)But hey....its all good right? Since we're spreading democracy! (/sarcasm)

Good point.

I remember when I saw the pictures of prisoners being abused - I was beside myself, and a friend said "they are taught to behave this way" - I couldn't believe it, but now - of course, I do.

Its no wonder that soldiers come back from combat tours a little wonky. We're raised from birth with the notion that hurting people is wrong, killing is wrong. Then you go into the armed forces where you suddenly are called to do the very things you've been told all your life are wrong. So its easier for the soldier to do his killing and maiming when he is told they arent PEOPLE he's hurting, they are commies, or gooks, or towel-heads or whatever other lovely little label the military brass thinks up to take away from the fact that these are indeed human beings.

And then when the soldiering job is done they go home and have to go back to being socially acceptable?

I just dont think a person's psyche is equipped for that. Not without some serious therapy.

I would NEVER make a good soldier.

There's a couple of ways to look at it and make no mistake, i'm not defending this action.

1. There is always a certain element, in any given group of people; being in a war zone can give that group permission to act out.

2. Living in a war zone, repeatedly being returned to a war zone can mess people up.

hey mom, i asked my marien friend about this video.
this is what he said:
The dogs and cats in iraq carry a desiese that is kinda like lepracy, and caues your skin to basicly kinda fall off. and so when dogs and cats come on to the base or around it they have to shoot it and burn it (or get the body as far away as possible). i guess they tried explaining it but no one really listend, he really got defenceve when i asked him about it. i wasnt sure if he was telling the truth so i asked my other friend and he told me the same thing. soooo i know its really messed up and stuff, and i did feel REALLY bad about it, but if it does have the desiese like he said then yeah.. but they should have killed the puppy before throwing it off the cliff.

My response would then be - why were they LAUGHING AND JOKING about it?

And yes - they should have humanly killed it first. And then burned it if they were really concerned about disease.

It's the first I've ever heard of dogs/cats over there carrying a disease as seriuos as leprosy that can be caught by humans. You'd think that would definately have made the news.

We've had a couple of incidents over here with soldiers and kittens. What sort of mentality are they instilling into these once human beings? I'm sorry if I have offended any decent people who are soldiers out there, maybe these guys were like that before they joined the army? I can't help bu think they have been turned into mindless killing machines, though.

And you are quite right, the behavior is unacceptable and the punishment is unacceptable.

I don't want to watch it :(

I did see that and was horrified.
War is bad enough, why would they do that and to be unfeeling ehough to brag about it and post it on the internet?

USMC Better off without these idiots...

For all the good that the Marines do, it takes a couple of idiots like these two to taint years of service by our proud servicemen. Please do not try to extend sympathy to either of them (having been in a war zone, I have NEVER hurt a helpless animal, regardless of alleged diseases they may carry).

The Corp is far better off, and I am sure they will look back (as they are picking pineapples in Hawaii), on how their 15 seconds of 'fame', costed them and our nation so much more.

Didn't want to view video

Like many of the readers of your blog, we didn't want to view the video on YouTube.com either. Just the mere thought of what happened to that animal is enough to make anyone with feelings physically ill. What has happened to us as a society where someone could do something like this and then laugh about it?
