Chickens First Night In The Coop

At dusk (wich is now after 8pm) I went out to show the chickens how to bed down for the night.
I turned on the heat lamp and sat near the stairs and called to them.
They came and some even came up the stairs, but they wouldn't go in.
I kept calling and coaxing.
The darker it got - the more agitated they became (peeping away).
Two came up and let me pick them up and put them inside.
Then one more came.
Then more came close enough for me to scoop them up.
I got them all inside, but they were still peeping their displeasure at the situation.
I adjusted the light and hung out with them for a little while.
Then I left them to it. I left the door cracked in case they wanted to go outside on their own when the sun came up.
I checked on them a couple six or eight times before going to bed myself.
I woke up twice during the night. Once because I heard dogs barking and thought the chicks were under attack. Once because I felt the need to look out and make sure the heat lamp was on.
In the AM I woke up and looked out - there were chickens playing in the yard (I didn't have to coax them outside - thank goodness)
