Compost

This is what happens when you let melon peels/seeds, random vegetable trimmings, uneaten oatmeal, and other organic items sit in a pile and rot.  Nothing is better than home rotted compost :-)

On a less dirty note - I had a perio appt. this morning.
(I have a very aggressive form of periodonal disease - been battling it for over 10 years now).
Doc says I'm doing really good.  The Periostat is helping - will probably have to take it the rest of my life though.
This year I'll only have one surgery for one small root area that needs to be planed smooth - what a relief.

I listened to an interview on NPR with Senator Chris Dodd on his book Letters From Nuremberg.  Wow, what an interesting guy - I was very impressed with his political opinions and ideas.  I never gave him a second thought before - but now I'll be paying attention.  I also hope our library gets that book.

You didn't eat all your oatmeal!?

My teeth aren't great; i'm not even sure how many crowns i have, but my gums are in good shape.

I heard the interview; he's not flashy enough to get through the primaries.

I may have to enclose our compost pile because everything i put in is dug up by, i presume, racoons. A slightly different way to recycle!

I haven't made my daily post today, but it will involve racoons (stay tuned... haha). I made mine with cinder blocks and I cover them with plywood on top, but it's all pretty open. The neighbors chickens like to get in there are peck at bugs which is fine with me since they leave behind nitrogen :-)

Do you have a drum or anything to turn your compost? Or do you let it just "cook" in place? We just got food scrap service added to our yard waste recycling. I was thrilled. I never did the compost thing and I hated throwing away all that goodness.

Yeah for compost. Of course you might think we are daft - we pay to have our stuff recycled and then I pay to buy it back from the compost company!!! I try not to think about that, but rather the fact I support both ends of the process :)

I just have three big piles (two at the moment) defined by cinder blocks. Mine turns to compost in about 6 months since I always postpone turning them (sometimes never turn them).
Wow - I'd never heard of yard waste recycling. How does that work? Is is part of trash pickup? I am always asking (begging) for people's grass clippings and coffee grounds. Maybe I should start offering to take them off their hands for a small fee..... :-)
