Current Events are just crazy lately.....................

Arizona Immigration Law.......  I've got mixed feelings - but bottom line is I think it requires racial profiling, so I'm against it. (I hope Latinos and Hispanic-Americans boycott Arizona on principal) One positive - it will probably prod the current administration to get moving with immigration reform.

I hope all the DRILL HERE DRILL NOW fanatics have cooled their jets a little given the situation in the Gulf of Mexico.  Today I read that the oil spill is only 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana - and they are having to consider setting it on fire.

Goldman Sachs is finally on trial.  I hope it's not all for show.  So many good people have suffered, in part, because of these greedy SOB's - I hope justice is done.  (this whoe financial meltdown going to make a really interesting reading, movie and/or mini-series someday too)

My sister moved from California to Arizona about a year and a half ago. She is very near the border of Mexico and New Mexico. As soon as she got there, she said that law enforcement (don't know if seh meant local, state, or federal) are like old western vigilantes when it comes to immigration issues.

I have mixed feelings about this, but I don't think the new Arizona law is the solution.

Immigration is not about racial profiling it's about law enforcement. I have had to deal with immigration twice when returning from Europe. You have met me in person so you know I am white. I had to deal the first time with immigration for 5 hours and was interrogated. They even took all my luggage and went through it and reading what ever papers I had in it. Even my note book. I accepted it for what it was. I didn't like it but I accepted it.

White people have to deal with immigration like anyone else.

The only person I have seen discriminated against personally was someone that came from South Africa. By some of the things the immigration people where saying it seemed like there was a certain policy set for people from Africa. That woman was white, she had all her paper work, she was refused entry.

That said people have to show their ID's all the time. When we are stopped by a cop in traffic, when we go to the bank, when you have large purchases at stores. Showing ID is a fact of life.

So I don't see showing ID as racial profiling. I am sure you as a white woman have had to show your ID before too.

The law says that police can challenge anyone who they feel might not be here legally.

By design - this is going to result in a great many people of color to be harassed based on the way they look. It's discriminatory and wrong.

If I was a white Mexican, I'd feel discriminated against if I was pulled over and forced to prove I was a legal Mexican simply because the color of my skin and eyes were not brown. I have no doubt it would make me feel like a second class citizen as well.

If the law said that EVERYONE who was pulled over or arrested had to prove their legal right to be in the country, that would be different. This law is not written that way.

In Ohio, they can arrest you, if you are asked to produce an ID and can't or refuse. That is not freedom; you should be able to say "Get the HELL out of here." It is unacceptable, yet that is the way ot is.

That is a racist remark about Germans! Don't you think a German might find that offensive?

Besides Hitler was not German he was Austrian like Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger.

German = Nazi?

I know you are not racist but you did make a racist remark here. It's OK... I still love you.

Besides all countries ask immigrants to show their papers. This is not unique to the USA.

Actually he does enjoy Nazi memorabilia.

The Guardian newspaper from the UK claimed that he possessed America's largest collection of Nazi memorabilia.

The only way for Mexicans or anyone else not to have to deal with immigration laws is not to immigrate. Same for me. It is a choice we made so we all have to deal with the law. When I say we I mean immigrants.

They have guidelines they have to follow for reasonable suspicion they are not arresting people for not having ID's. Most of the law is worded the same as the federal law. Have you read the Arizona law regarding this?

It is not by design to harass people of color. If it where I would not have been detained. Should I feel discriminated against? Was I a victim and didn't know it?

Like I said there are white people getting nailed for proof too. I have lived through it. I have seen other people go through it.

This is about laws. If this was applied to any other law it would not stand. It's like saying a Mexican guilty of murder was being harassed by the law because of his race. He broke the law but we should let him go because of his race. White people break the law too. Breaking the law is not a race issue.
