Butterflies, Shells, and Marcels
Nov. 1st, 2009 02:39 pmI took these pictures Friday night at work. I am working with Marcel at the restaurant all this weekend since Felicitas is in the Hospital with the baby. I don't know the whole routine yet, but I do my best. Marcel is very patient he only yelled "JESUS CHRIST!!" at me once. :-)
Marcel (being a good sport and smiling) ;-)

Head waiter Sean picking up food.

Marcel's son Dominik who is doing salads/desserts (probably the safest place to be aside from the dishwashing machine)

Monarch Butterflies are migrating through Corpus on their way south. There are swarms of them. Last night, after work, Marcel and I went to sit on the beach (at midnight....on Halloween.....we like to live dangerously). The butterflies carpeted the parking lot since they 1.) don't usually fly at night and 2.) can't fly if their body temp drops below 86F. I felt sorry for them. They were either just sitting on the ground - or they were trying desperately to fly without any luck.
This morning we returned to the beach and the beach was like a morgue with dead fish (due to Red Tide) and Monarch Butterflies (who didn't make it through the night). I picked up one of the butterflies who was damp from the surf, and I walked with him cupped in my hand. Marcel thought I was a little nuts.
I had him in one hand and picked up shells in the other. There was an amazing number of good shells to be had since 1.) it's November and there are hardly any tourists right now and 2.) Red tide has killed the inhabitants of some pre-maturely and they are all washing up at around the same time. We got some nice'uns

As we were walking to the Jetty the butterfly began to come to life - and he poked his little head out from between my fingers. While we were on the Jetty I opened up my hand, and he flew away!!! It was so awesome. He charged his body battery in my warm hands and then took off! I loved it.

Did you get any shells with holes in? They can be good for crafts :)

Date: 2009-11-03 02:22 am (UTC)You are lucky - I could never work in the Mr.'s restaurant. He'd drive me nuts, and vice versa. Of course, I once worked in a restaurant, and was "released" three days later. I just didn't have the right spunk.
