This morning I went out first thing to feed the chickens.  One of my hens was bloodied.  I had a heck of a time catching her - in the rain no less, and my rooster nearly had a heart attack over the whole episode.  I couldn't leave her there though - the other birds would pick at her endlessly if I did.

I hot her inside and wrapped her in a towel to keep her still.  Sierra scurried to get random first aid supplies.  I got her cleaned up best I could - what a mess.  I decided at least for today I'd keep her in my back bathroom - I'd like to clean her further when I have time and hopefully seal the wound up before turning her loose again..

Jeez - whattaway to start a Friday......

Do you know how she was hurt? I hope the other chickens didn't do it. What did Roo do when you where trying to catch her? Was he yelling at you or chasing you?

I'm not sure - it looks like a cut (maybe from a sharp stick or wire), but they may have picked at her around it and made it worse. Roo didn't threaten me, but he was hysterical - poor guy.

I hope she doesn't get pecked at while she is healing.

I would love to have known what he was thinking and saying while you where trying to catch her.

I often wonder what animals think about things.

oh, poor baby! They must be pecking on her? Can't tell if the bleeding is on her comb... or beak? Has she been at the bottom of the pecking order all along or are they bothering a wound she got somehow?

You're such a good chicky mama...

The main cut is at the base of her comb, and it bled pretty good. Shey also has peck marks as well. I'm glad I saw it when I did.

yes, definitely... sometimes those darn roos are holding onto the females combs as they are doing their thing.. then if the place gets bloodied the others start to peck at it. Kind of barbaric creatures in some ways.

Pretty sure she cut the base of her comb on something sharp - and everyone has been picking at it because it's bleeding (part of their nature - gross as it is)

I cleaned up her area this morning, and she was doing okay. When I get home from work I'm going to work with her some more. I'll probably keep her in the room one more night then let her loose. She's not a happy camper without the rest of the flock.

Yes, she's back with the flock. So far so good - I check to be sure they aren't picking at her. She looks like hell, but she's okay.

Thanks for asking :-)
