Long story short.......

The chicken order I canceled in January arrived this morning.  Post office said, no, I can't send it back.

I had the brooder equipment (thanks to my parents), but nothing else.

Had to make a side trip to Tractor Supply on the way to the post office for wood shavings and starter mash.

I scrambled to get them situated before I had to go to work.  Talk about an adrenaline rush!!

Here is another picture of them in the brooder just before I went to work.

Jeez..... if this isn't the universe deciding what is best for me, I don't know what is.

No clue what to do now.  I imagine I'll be using the vacation days coming up (Friday - Tuesday) to get going building a coop.  It will be a few weeks before they have to go outside, so that's a blessing.

p.s - they are cute and warm.  I'm actually tickled (this emotion developed AFTER I had my nervous breakdown)

Congratulations!

They're cute. But, how the heck do you mail chickens?

They are so cute! I can't wait to hear more stories about them and see pics of them growing up.

Haha - well, it was a shock. Luckily I have experience with livestock, so I was able to pull myself together and get them situated. Getting a home built for them is what I'm the most worried about. The barriers mostly as lots of predators like having chicken dinner, so you have to dig a trench and bury the fencing in a way where raccoons etc. can't burrow beneath. (or I can just let them stay inside with me.... not) :-)

They are pure bred Delawares which are very friendly and calm breed. They will mostly be pets (with the added benefit of guilt-free eggs) - so temperment was an important factor. I'll only be keeping about 10 and selling the rest. I had to get 25 minimum in order for them to send them to me.

I wish I could have some but I don't think the apartment would go for it.

Images of chickens on the balcony and running loose in the apartment are coming to mind. I would be known as the crazy chicken lady no doubt.

No chicken dinners for me. For me it would be like eating my cat.

They are all females with the exception of the one marked with the red dot - he's a rooster.

Some folks go and get a bucket of chicken for the fmaily dinner; you, my friend, have a box of chickens delivered for pets!

Actually I am suprised they didnt sent 2 roosters in anticipation of natures attrition rate of pullets.
