2007 Summer Garden: May Update
May. 25th, 2007 02:03 pmROW 1
Amaranth: Once again this year the Amaranth didn't make it. I even put up hooped row covers. I'm not giving up. Next year I'll try again maybe planting beginning in May and see if the warmer weather makes a difference. I'll also plant heavier.
Coriander: I think I planted this in the beginning of March, and it went to seed int he beginning of May. It did grow good for me though - I'll plant it again this fall and It'll probably do better for me growing through the winter like my parsley does.
Row 2
Soybeans: Two scattered plantings. They are growing well. I planted in double rows, so I hope I didn't crowd them too much. I know the bush beans are floppy if they don't have others to keep them up. I saw blooms on them a few days ago. Man, I hope they do well - I'd like to grow a row of them each year for edamame.
Row 3
Okra: A few of the original plants died. I think I planted them a little too early. Two currently are iffy, but three are doing quite well. I have a single okra pod on one, and I see blooms developing on the rest of them. I personally don't like to eat Okra, but I'm happy to grow it for people who do.
New Zealand Spinach: This is growing gangbusters. It's very healthy and the bugs don't seem to be at all interested in it. I'll grow this every year for sure.
Garlic: Still growing without end in sight. I thought it would be harvested by now, but I was wrong. I planted Soybeans with them thinking any day the garlic would be done. Now the beans are getting big and it's a problem, so I'll pull them up and compost them this weekend.
Basil: This is Thai Lemon Basil. Very fragrant and tasty. It got a bad start, but with the warmth it's now doing well. It seems fragile, so I'm wondering how it will do with the hot weather to come.
Parsley: The solo plant that survived last summer is still with me. I sure did produce a lot over the months. I'll replant parsley again this fall. Good to have in the garden.
Row 5
Peppers: I have 4 sweet bell peppers and 4 mild Jalapenos. Both are growing well, but as always - the chili pepper plants are producing like crazy while the bell peppers are taking their time. All is well, and I've gotten many chilis already.
Row 6
Tomatoes: Cherry Tomatoes are growing beyond their stakes, and I am going to go ahead and pinch the tops to stop them this weekend. I'll let suckers develop and secure them to the posts. The 444's set a good crop of fruit heavy and big. The birds and bugs have taken a liking to them, so I pre-harvested many which are in my kitchen window ripening. This 444 variety works good in my garden, and I might experiment with others - this is the one I'll probably grow every year. I have no idea what the Cherry Tomato variety is I'm growing - I got it at Maldonados and the sales clerk there didn't know what it was called - it was just marked "Cherry" - duh.
Row 7 (plots)
Pole Asparagus Beans: They are taking off and going up the strings. Had some aphids which I sprayed off. Other than that no probs. Hasn't bloomed yet.
Malabar Spinach: Either the growth has been retarded in some way or this stuff just grows REALLY slowly. I have it - it's slowing getting bigger, but it hasn't even begun to vine yet. Keeping my eye on it.
Cucumbers: Growing Japanese long. All plants are healthy and productive and growing up the tower. Already gotten over 15 pounds of cukes from them, and they are just beginning. Very excellent this year with the cucumbers.
