When we lived in CA we had six hens and a rooster. Those poor hens NEVER got a moments rest. It seems that the rooster (at least for this breed, which were called Polish Cresents) could 'service' up to 40 hens a day. He eventually died and all the ladies breathed a sigh of relief.
