The side doors I close in winter at night. In the summer it's so warm that I leave them open. Once the chickens become full grown there isn't a risk from hawks or cats. Only dogs. My chickens could totally take any of the neighbor cats! :-)
They really aren't a lot of work. Especially if you can free range them during the day. They naturally fertilize the yard and eat bugs - you only need to keep food and water in the bowl and collect eggs - then once every couple of weeks clean the coop (takes about 15 minutes).
